A Great Family Destination – The Dallas Zoo

For families that want to combine a great day out with an educational experience, the Dallas Zoo simply ticks all the right boxes. It is a fabulous day out and the younger members of the family will be exposed not only to some of the most interesting and magnificent animals on the planet but also to strong conservation-orientated lessons.

So popular is the zoo that it sees around a million people visit it every year – and it’s open 364 days a year, so there really is no excuse to miss out on its attractions. The 106-acre zoo is only three miles from downtime Dallas and offers access to both locals and visitors to the city. It’s been around since 1888 when its collection was significantly less impressive than it is today. In fact, the zoo population when it first opened its doors consisted of two deer and two Mountain Lions. Today the oldest (and largest) zoo in the state is home to more than 2,000 aminals from 400 different species.

Both young and old will marvel at the sight of animals that are housed in habitats that closely mimic the natural environments where they are found in the wild. One of the highlights is the 11-acre ‘Giants of the Savanna’ exhibit. This 11-acre marvel is the only exhibit in the U.S. that mixes elephants with other species – making it a dynamic experience that should be a highlight of any trip to the zoo. For those who want their preschoolers to develop an appreciation of the natural world, the zoo also runs the ‘Wild Earth Pre-school’ which connects children aged 3-5 with animals and nature.

For the very youngest members of the family, the daily Giraffe feedings will bring laughter and smiles of joy, as will the many shows and lectures provided by some of the 750 dedicated staff members at the zoo. For those who want to know what makes the zoo such a special place, a ticket to the ‘Backstage Safari’ will provide an experience that will not soon be forgotten.

There are also a number of food outlets at the zoo, including the Bantu Barbecue, the Prime Meridian Café (overlooking the Flamingo pond), and the Serengeti Grill with outdoor-only seating overlooking the Lion’s Den (part of the Giants of the Savanna exhibit.

For the perfect day out that will delight the curious and provide a spectacle that creates wonderful memories take some time off to enjoy the great Dallas Zoo experience.
