The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Experience

As the Chief hub for American Airlines, it is no wonder that the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is one of the busiest in the United States. For travelers to either Dallas or Fort Worth, the fact that the airport is equidistant between these two locations makes it extremely convenient.

The airport was designed in the 1960s with the aim of reducing the time that passengers spent accessing their departure gates. However it has undergone several redesigns and upgrades since first opening, many necessitated by the need for increased security. Increased passenger numbers also made its original design featuring long and narrow semi-circular terminals inefficient, although the installation of a tram system and a series of renovations have largely solved the issue – and transformed the airport into one of the most efficient in the country.

The airport has 5 terminals. Terminals A, B, and C manage domestic flights, while Terminal D and E handles international and domestic arrivals and departures. Terminals A, B, and C are dedicated to flights handled by American Airlines, while terminal D serves a large number of domestic and international carriers. The DFW Corporate Airport Terminal handles private flights and boutique airlines.

Access to the airport and exiting by car is today much less stressful than was the case in the not too distant past. The confusing mix of interchanges and highways was upgraded at a cost of around $1 billion.

Those visiting either Dallas or Fort Worth can take advantage of the door-to-door shuttle service which is highly efficient, or rent a car from any one of the many rental service outlets that can be easily accessed via a shared shuttle service.

The airport also has direct rail links to both Dallas and Fort Worth.

Getting around the airport is a breeze, thanks to the Skylink people mover system. The ‘Terminal Link’ shuttle system also operates between terminals.

those who are awaiting flights can take in the Art Program installation in Terminal D, where millions of dollars in locally produced art can be viewed or settle in to take in the news and entertainment offered by 10 screens in terminal D. There are also numerous Airport Lounges available to selected travelers.

Refreshments are available in all terminals and include such fast food outlets as Fuddruckers Hamburgers, Whataburger, Chik-fil-A, and the ever-present McDonald’s. There are also a number of mid-range options and upscale venues such as Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen and III Forks Prime Steakhouse.

International travelers have access to a well-stocked duty-free shop.

Thanks to extensive redesigns the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is a transportation hub that reduces the stress of flying – and that is what each and every traveler values in an airport.
